RE: Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5 Developer Preview (9M3092): msg#01550java-dev
I'll throw in my vote to be able to support multiple updates of Java, and switch between them. It would me a lot of things easier. It would also be great if this mechanism worked for non-developer updates, in case an update breaks a customer's app in the field. This would be WONDERFUL if you could do this. I know people around here hate to hear how "windows does it", but seriously, this makes testing new versions easy on windows. I just have to : 1. Download & install new JDK (which does NOT touch existing JDK 'installation') into new folder of my choosing 2. Change my JAVA_HOME environment variable to the JDK I want to be "active." 3. Run/test Java programs. 4. When done, change environment variable back to previous value. Also, at any time, if I get a report of a bug for a particular JDK on Windows, I just temporarily change the env variable to point to that JDK version I want to test (I keep all previous JDKs for testing) , and when done change the env variable back. It makes it painless to test and install new JDK versions on Windows, and I'd LOVE to have this same easy ability on the Mac! Thanks for even thinking about doing this Mike.
