YMMV, of course.

Meanwhile, I'm trying really hard to plug in an external fire wire disk
into my aluminium MacBook, but look as hard as I can I can't find the
FireWire socket!

USB works just as well on reasonably recent models.

Last time I used Carbon Copy Cloner it did a fine job, but it took many
hours to copy a partition from my 30 Gb iBook. I dread to think how much
time it would waste today, but I certainly can't afford to be without my
Mac while it's working.

Then use SuperDuper! It's much more efficient, because it only does a full clone once. After that it has a mode where it only copies the differences. You can get a fresh clone in mere minutes with that.

All these suggestions of virtualisation, alternative partitions, external
drives etc are complete kludges which involve considerable time and
disruption.

They have the advantage of actually working in the here and now.

The basic truth is that OS X lacks a credible roll back system, and, yes,
Windows *is* better in this respect.

Perhaps. I'd say it's just different.
