Had a look into the parameters and changed MaxBurstLength in ietd.conf from 262144 to 65536,
which is more decent for only 256 MB memory. Worked fine now.

I should have looked a little bit further, but then again I didn't realize it was a memory allocation problem.

By the way, shouldn't the parameter "ScsiId=" also be mentioned in the ietd.conf manual page?

IIRC, setting a SCSI ID for your volume should be sufficient:

Target iqn.1999-09.com.example:foo
        Lun 0 Path=/dev/hdc,Type=fileio,ScsiId=$SCSI_ID
