Yeah same here with my dell. Just use the 6 to 4 pin adapter that came
with your iPod.
Keep in mind that a 4 pin firewire port lacks a "power" line, so when
connected you will be running off your iPod batteries.
I think a few laptop manufacts have full 6 pin firewire plugs though.
Forgot which ones exactly.

I have an Inspiron 8000 and my iPod works fine with that.
