Re: IEEE 1394 on Dell Laptop: msg#00071ipod.ephpod
It will most likely work. My iPod functions just fine with the built-in firewire in my IBM thankpad. Remember, though, that all 4 pin firewire solutions are unpowered. That means that the iPod will not recharge while plugged into the laptop and you'll be using the iPod's internal battery to power the iPod's hard disk while you are transferring files from the laptop. This is true for most PCCard firewire adapters (even the 6 pin kind) too. So..generally speaking: laptop + iPod = you'll need to recharge your iPod with the wall adapter. There is at least one work-around for this problem that uses a special cable..I think it's called "fire-power" or something like that. If for some reason you do get a PCCard firewire adapter, I've been using an Adapted "FireConnect" card with other laptops that don't have built-in firewire and that card has worked flawlessly. There are cheaper cards, however, which ought to work too. -----Original Message----- From: ephpod-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ephpod-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of dave - Sent: Saturday, July 26, 2003 12:52 AM To: ephpod@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ephpod] IEEE 1394 on Dell Laptop Has anyone tested the iPod with the built-in firewire on Dell laptops? I'm not sure about all the laptops, but I know some new models come with a IEEE 1394 4-pin connector. Is it compatible with iPod? Or is a separate firewire card necessary? If so, what's a good PC card? _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------------------------------ ephPod Mailing List FAQ and HomePage http://www.ephpod.com mailto:ephpod-on@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to susbcribe mailto:ephpod-off@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to unsusbcribe mailto:ephpod@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx the mailing-list itself ------------------------------------------------------ ephPod Mailing List FAQ and HomePage http://www.ephpod.com mailto:ephpod-on@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to susbcribe mailto:ephpod-off@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to unsusbcribe mailto:ephpod@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx the mailing-list itself |
