I have an original (Mac Version 5gb) reformatted to Fat32. Actually the scandisk and defrag did nothing for me, after I re-formatted all my song lock-ups went away. Also, in the past (before re-formatting) I noticed if I fill the iPod with less than 170megs free I would get more lockups, So I played around with freeing up some space and found that keeping 200 megs free seemed to stop the lockups.
