Nope, the song-gap thing is a common complaint which hasn't been fixed. I've
been hoping that Apple might have released a new update at some stage to
take care of that - certain albums are mixed together in a fashion that
makes song gaps quite annoying as well.

Playing a big mp3 file shouldn't be too much of a concern though - the iPod
will (should) only spin up the hard drive to cache the data when it needs
to. So if you start playing a 90mb MP3 file, the drive will spin up, buffer
the first 32mb, then stop and wait until the buffer is almost empty until it
caches the next chunk. I have a bunch of 80 minute mixes on my iPod that
have never noticeably decreased battery life. Then again, I could be talking
a load of junk - can somebody confirm whether the above is true?
