Hi William,

Orphans are songs that don't appear in any playlist on your iPod.   If
you had no playlists created when you chose "Create orphan playlist"
(or whatever the exact option was) then all your songs will appear
there.

What I do to get around this is create playlists for each album (there
should be an option in the menus to do this automatically), then once
that is done create the orphan playlist.
