We currently have an opening for a Director of Software Development at our
Tempe, AZ location. This individual is a highly motivated, self-directed, and
experienced person to lead all software development of our product lines. The
ideal candidate is a professional who is, or has been, a technically-deep
Software Development Manager for a company that develops enterprise level
software applications and has managed teams in excess of 15+ developers and
database administrators. Strong management skills and a proven track record of
providing direction/leadership to others are essential. The candidate must be
an effective communicator and problem-solver as this position requires
innovation in making continuous process improvement to existing analytic
methods/techniques. Lastly, the candidate must possess demonstrated skills in
leading and managing change; should possess the ability to pull together ideas
and suggestions, shape them into a vision, and then implement this
product vision.

This role reports directly to the Chief Information Officer. Success will be
measured by the candidate’s ability to continue to build a high-caliber team
and develop high quality software, on time and within budget.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Supervisory / Managerial
Manages and directs team of 20 – 25 application developers/analysts/managers.
Interview, select and hire new associates for open positions within team
Conducts annual performance reviews and career planning for associates
Provides ongoing coaching, counseling and development of associates in
applications knowledge, process knowledge and professional software development
and service delivery disciplines
Provides day-to-day direction and coordination of work to associates
Provide cross-training opportunities to ensure sufficient coverage for all
assigned applications
Resolves conflict, when necessary, amongst associates
Leads others in analysis and development tasks
Manages resource assignments, workload balancing and capacity planning of
assigned work for team members based on IS priorities
Contributes resource requirements to annual budget planning


Application Ownership
Responsible for all aspects of software development that follows a well defined
system development life cycle.
Directs applications systems analysis and design, database management,
programming activities, configuration capacity planning, software products
evaluation, systems performance analysis and optimization, unit testing and
documentation.
Maintains strong relationships with business leaders, system users, and other
departmental directors/managers to ensure client needs are met, project
activities are delivered as committed, and applications meet service level
agreement (SLA) targets
Leads cross-functional applications teams in Systems Leader role to provide
estimates, requirements, design, configuration, development, integration,
testing, and production turnover activities to major capital projects
Partners with business leaders in developing cost/benefit analysis and proposal
level scoping documents for assigned applications and business functions
Provides input to Executive Management on strategic direction of the company,
recommending applications, solutions and vendors.
Demonstrates expert knowledge in applications under their control
Works with applications architects to provide long-term strategy for assigned
applications
Ensures written documentation is prepared and published by team for all
applications
Plans and oversees patch and release management for assigned applications
Provides application requirements to annual budget planning
Proactively recommend enhancements to improve business value and stability of
applications
Creates and applies development standards and policies.

Application Support
Manages team to provide production support, problem management, release
management and enhancements for all business applications
Provides, through team, Tier 2 and Tier 3 support for assigned applications.
Facilitates delivery of Tier 4 support through applications vendors
Furnishes short and long-term solutions to incidents and problems to prevent
recurrences, provide production stability and meet SLA service levels
Coordinates project and production changes through the change control process
ensuring readiness and quality
Interacts with and coordinates between the user community, helpdesk, quality
assurance, audit and production.
Prepares activity and progress reports regarding applications systems changes,
cost and time estimates for projects and long and short range plans for
application selection, software systems development, systems maintenance,
production activities or for necessary support resources.
Assists with the evaluation of vendor proposals for purchases of software and
technical services to meet technical specifications.
Ensures assigned processes are developed, communicated, published and
continuously improved within service delivery and software development (SDLC)
methodologies

TECHNICAL/EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree, required. Computer Science Degree, preferred.
· 10+ years of demonstrated experience in application design and
development, systems integration experience in multiple applications.
· 7+ years experience working in a formal lifecycle development
environment desired.
· Extensive project management experience and proven track record
managing a development organization.
· Experience managing offshore/nearshore teams preferred
· Experience must be in building software products used by business
operations and/or delivered as web-application products or other hosted
solutions to clients.
· Candidate must be a software expert, especially in object-orientated
design and software architecture.
· Proficient at SQL.
· Familiarity with .NET and strong understanding of relational database
design.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Project, Excel
