Key Skills: UNIX, vDeck, WINDOWS O/S, LINUX, FreeBSD, Shell Scripting, Perl, Networking, FTP, DNS, MySQL, SSL, Cisco Location: Downtown Phoenix, AZ Rate: DOE Duration: 6+ months (possible extension) Status: W2 Ref #16037 DEFINITION The Sr. System Administrator is a Leading Level (5+ years) Technical position, reporting directly to the Director of Information Technology. The Sr. System Administrator applies advanced and sophisticated technical knowledge, specific to web server administration and management. The Sr. System Administrator position is a hands-on application of administration, maintenance and operations support, on UNIX and Windows based systems. The Sr. System Administrator's functions will be guided by the goal of ensuring the highest quality of customer user experience, service and satisfaction. JOB REQUIREMENTS Sr. System Administrators are initially evaluated based on their qualifications, and continually monitored for their improvements in the following areas: - Advanced level work with Linux, FreeBSD and Windows Operating Systems - Programming and Scripting (Shell Scripting, Perl) - Troubleshooting Hardware (Servers, Consoles, Switches, Routers, etc?) - Follow up on, always learn new technologies, and in turn, bring new ideas and methodologies to the workplace, with minimal support and guidance - A Self Started with strong work habits - Ability to communicate effectively, train peers, and interact professionally with a diverse group of internal and external clients - Ability to work productively in and out of Team environments - Ability to produce quick fixes, as well as formulate long term solutions to problems - Maintain large number of UNIX and Windows servers - Experience in rolling out new systems, maintaining, upgrading, replacing and improving long-term performance of the systems, as well as supporting networking equipment Upon commencement of employment, it is expected of the System Administrator to be knowledgeable of the following: - FTP - Email and Email Clients - Publishing - Hosting - DNS - MySQL - Configuration of SSL certificates - Software Installation - Etc? Within 30 days of commencement of employment, it is expected of the System Engineer to be thoroughly knowledgeable and proficient in client's proprietary products such as vDeck, Dedicated Server, Virtual Hosting, and the non-proprietary products such as cPanel and Plesk control panels and their functions, in order to support the software at all levels, except development of the software. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: NOTE: The following are duties typically performed by the Sr. System Administrators. Sr. System Administrators may perform other related duties as well, at an equivalent level. These duties may be disbursed among multiple Sr. System Administrators; therefore any single Sr. System Administrator may not necessarily perform all duties listed, (provided there is more than one). (65%) Technical Duties § Service, Maintenance, and Support - Work independently to support over 300 UNIX and Windows servers providing web server hosting services - (On a Daily Basis) Administer, Monitor, Troubleshoot and Maintain development and production web, mail, network and Internal Infrastructure systems - Monitor and Maintain server security configuration - Make critical decisions regarding serious server or network issues and carry out effort to stabilize the issue - Install FreeBSD, LINUX and Windows Hardware, Software upgrades and patches - Plan, Implement and Manage Data storage - Plan and Implement System Backup and Disaster Recovery - Document Procedures - Monitor system logs and activity on all servers - Replace defective hardware on servers as necessary § Development - Research new technologies and present recommendations and justifications on major hardware and software purchases - Develop and test new servers and services, including writing scripts and patching existing source code (25%) Training and Communication - Attend and actively participate in weekly System Administration and Engineering team meetings - Attend monthly System Admin-Programmer-Technical Coordinator meetings - Log and report via email all changes to system software and configurations as well as daily shift events that are important for the team to know - Participate in discussion on the System Administrator mailing list - Provide training and opportunities for learning company systems to others within the organization (15%) Administrative Duties - Update equipment inventory for tracking purposes - Assist in hiring and training of new System Administrators and System Engineers MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Previous experience working in a web hosting/web data center firm - Effective written and verbal communicator - Ability to work under pressure - Strong work ethic and able to work independently - Excellent organizational skills - Have strong working knowledge of the following, but not limited to, CPanel, Apache 1.3.x and 2.0, ProFTPd, MySQL, PHP, Sendmail, Exim, SSHd, Qmail, Qpopper, Bind, Nagios, DNS, Bind, etc? - Working knowledge in configuration and deployment of Cisco and Foundry Networks routers, switches and firewalls - Must be able to determine when a server is in a 'distressed' state, e.g. network performing badly, short of swap space, short of RAM, overloaded CPU, overloaded I/O subsystem. Understand how to gather more information and recommend a solution - Knowledge of how to modify kernel and device driver behavior - Strong understanding of network and server security - Experience in automating system administration tasks through scripting/programming - Knowledge in various backup hardware and software LICENSE / OTHER REQUIREMENTS - Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license may be required for some positions. - Must pass background check.
