Bash and UTF-8

I remember about half a year ago there was a discussion about
UTF-8 support in bash and readline. The conclusion was that
you'll need to patch both of them to get proper UTF-8 support.

Is this still the same.
Any updates on the subject.






- BTW 
   I'm running Slackware 8.1 beta, and its bash still doesn't
   have UTF-8 support.
