I thought about this more and I came up with what I think is a good
enough fix. I submitted a small patch.
The implementation is not the same as for the Java editor but I think
that the end result will be equivalent for most of us.

I live with the annoyance but would much rather have it fixed or
removed. But still does not stop me form using the latest version.

Thanks for the effort. Unfortunately bugs 1454529 and 1438406 (in
fact they are the same) are not fixed and they have been the only
annoying thing that has kept me from using the CVS version full time.
I know how to comment out the code that inserts the extra bracket, so
I might just do that from now on but I wonder if there more people
that may not upgrade because of that.
The bug was introduced by the fix of 1416503 and that much was
understood by the developer. I think that the current logic that is
used for []'s and ()'s brackets cannot be used for {}'s. From what I
can tell that is not the way the Java editor works (but I haven't yet
been able to figure out how it works either). Any thoughts on how
this should be done? I've spent some hours trying to fix this myself
but with no success.

Surprise, surprise!
The next (hopefully) stable release has been posted to sourceforge.
It can be installed either manually by downloading the .bin.zip file
or by using this update site:
Name. PHPeclipse Update Site
URL: http://phpeclipse.sourceforge.net/update/releases
Please note that this is a different URL than the one you might be
updating your CVS snapshots with.
Cheers
