  - do we really need a _recursiveDelete() function with so many sql calls just 
to remove a directory sub tree?
  - improve error checking and reporting when doing a folder delete
  - not sure how the other apps are affected, gollem seems to be the only one, 
so i've defaulted the $recursive param to true, to keep to how the previous 
code behaved. maybe it should be defaulted to false so it behaves like most 
file systems not allowing non-empty folders to be deleted until forced.
