Re: Wireless performance...: msg#00135hardware.voyetra.audiotron
With all of this talk on the list of people having Wireless troubles, I thought I would advocate the Buffalo WBR-G54 router/switch/ap/bridge. Recently Roddie Hasan was on this very list talking about them and we took the discussion off list. While I haven't personally bought any of them yet, my brother was having lots of wireless problems and stability issues with his Linksys gear. He came to me for some advice and I encouraged him to give these guys a shot. So, he went down to CompUSA and bought two of them, linked them together and is extremely pleased with how much better everything is running now. He has a cable modem and computer on one of them in his bedroom and it's bridged wirelessly to the other in his living room. Since the Buffalo supports WDS bridging, he can still use both simultaneously as access points and when he takes his laptop through the house, he can easily switch to whichever has the stronger signal with no problem! His previous Linksys' boxes would continuously lose each other and sometimes you wouldn't even get a signal sitting 4 feet from the antenna! It was pretty pathetic. I'm sure I'll be buying a few of these suckers soon myself. Thanks Roddie for the recommendations! Also, I have read the following article on this particular unit and it has some great information regarding mixing B/G on the same network: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/Reviews-33-ProdID-WBRG54.php (Check on the Wireless Performance page) I have ALSO read somewhere that disabling B compatibility on many G products could actually cost a tremendous amount of performance when B devices continuously and repeatedly attempt to associate with a G access point and fail over-and-over again. I think they were saying the only way around this is to make sure your network is encrypted (a good idea anyway). It has something to do with preventing the machine from even being able to start the association process. Therefore, disabling B compatibility is BAD unless you also encrypt. --Chris ----------------------------------------------------------- List archives: http://maillist.voyetra.com/audiotron.html You may leave the list at any time by sending an e-mail to LISTSERV@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with only the words "SIGNOFF AUDIOTRON" in the body of the e-mail.
