I think that while it is true that 'b' degrades 'g', the impact isn't enough
that you should fret too much. You could probably get as much back by using
'b' level encryption (ie 40bit) rather than 128 or 256. My own testing shows
about 10% improvement in using no encryption over 256bit WPA.
Either way, for a fixed application such as AT wires will always be better,
if you can possibly rig them in.

If you have a "b" client associate with a "g" access point, then
*all* stations on that access point drop to nearly "b" speeds (true
"g" clients are more than 11Mb, but not by much). This is due to an
incompatibility in the "backwards compatiable" part of the "g" frame
headers. It works, but it all works slowly.

In the case of a neighbor with a "b" system, unless you are on
similar frequencies or unless they have a end-station that associates
with your access point, it shouldn't be a problem.
