Subject: Re: mp3gain question

I'm not sure if it has changed, but the author recommeded 89 db, which for me
is sufficient for 99.5% of my tracks. I have literally just a few (of 15,000)
that need 87 or a smidgen less. One track is 82 db.

However, I have not rippe any LP's; they are all CDs. I have found older CD's
have a much lower threshold before clipping sets in. This is because new music
is "compressed" so the soft & loud are closer together... to allow them to
crank it out of radios and clubs. Older music has a much larger dynamic range
(eg, Eagles).

For my portable players, I copy the tracks to another directory, and boost it
to 94db (or as high as the track will let it without clipping). This lets me
play it loud enough on airplanes, etc. Those extra 5db make a huge difference,
because it requires 2x wattage to produce just 3db (if you were trying to play
an 89db track as loud as the 94db on a portable, it would require almost 4x the
amp power -- which most portables just don't have).
