VHDL is considered the more verbose and structured of the two. So it may be
easier to pick up a large design and decipher it.
Verilog is very flexible and provides a whole lot more rope. There are a
good deal of tricks and shortcuts with Verilog.
It really depends on what you are comfortable with.

VHDL -> Verilog -> Accellera
Look forward to Accellera in the near future. http://www.ovi.org/
Accellera's policy is to transfer its standards to the IEEE.
