Hi,
I think the previous requirement of battery operation
would rule out most higher bandwidth solutions (like 802.11).
A data rate of the serial port on Tini can't even match
most serial-BT dongles ~115.2Kbaud-720Kbaud(flat out).

IR - Infra Red is line of sight and is not radio frequency spectrum.

As Fred stated:
"Class-1 BT is higher power for a range of up to ~100m and
penetrates many office obstacles (walls, partitions, etc)
just like your 2.4GHz portable phone, just very low power.
Works in handhelds like PDAs very nicely."

What type of distance do you need to cover?
Bandwidth and distance are generally the main factors for picking an RF
technology.
