Peter,
Have you tried a network sniffer, something like TCPDump,  on the Win2K box to see if there is any traffic on the network when you ping from the TINI to the network?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for all the information.  It makes sense and I've applied it, but I must still be missing something.
Here's my tini and win2k ipconfig settings:

I'm trying to ping an address which can be pinged from the command prompt on the same win2k
computer.  TINI has never been able to ping anything accept the win2k computer address, before
I installed the DSL software.  I'm not sure if this is a TINI issue or a win2k issue, but I do know
everything is ok, but TINI.  Do you see anything wrong?

Thanks,

Peter Bauer

Peter,

So the DSL modem has an RJ45 Ethernet connection and is connected to the
hub, correct ?

I presume the DSL modem provides you with a connection to the Internet
via your ISP. If so then it would be usual for the DSL modem to be
allocated a single IP address via a DHCP server administered via the
ISP. If you want to share this ONE IP address between two or more
computers then something has to implement NAT (Network Address
Translation).

(see http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm )

If you don't do this then even if packets could reach the Internet from
your TINI then there would be no mechanism to route replies back to the
TINI from the Internet.

If you use the Win2K box as the TINI's gateway then it has to be
prepared to route the packets to the Internet and handle any replies.
Since, from the perspective of the Internet, you only have one IP
address which is already used by the Win2K box the Win2K box has to
modify the headers of the packets from the TINI to make it appear that
they have come from this one IP address. It also has to determine which
of the replies from the Internet should be forwarded to the TINI and re-
map the packet headers back to the TINI's address.

"Internet connection sharing" on Win2K implements NAT and so will do
this for you. A prerequisite of using this is that the TINI must use an
IP address allocated for private use (probably 192.168.1.2 - look at the
help for Internet Connection Sharing on the Win2K box). Without Internet
Connection Sharing or similar the TINI will be on a very private network
that only includes it and the Win2K box.

I hope this helps.

Bob

      Peter,

Your ipconfig settings don't appear to have a value set for
      "Mailhost".

I gave up on SendMail until I could ping the primary DNS.  That
does not work, so no use
   to waste time typing.

This is required to specify the SMTP server that the TINI will
      use to
deliver mail, so "sendmail" won't work if it isn't set.
trying for simpler and simplerThat's where I started and have been workiing backwards and trying for simpler and simpler

   things ... and nothing works.

Your TINI appears to have the address 100.100.100.42 with the
      gateway
      being 100.100.100.12.

Yes, I set the addresses - I've been trying all sorts of thiings
   since nothing works.

      What is 100.100.100.12 ?

   See chart below

      Does you Win2K box have
two ethernet cards with one connected to the TINI via a
      cross-over cable
and the other connected to the DSL modem (or maybe the DSL modem
      is
connected to the Win2K box via USB ?).

   CHART
   ---------
   win2k box ( javakit )  ----------> hub 100/10
   (100.100.100.12)
   tini -----------------------------> hub 100
    (100.100.100.42)
   dsl modem ---------------------> hub

addresses I can ping on win2k command line cannot be pinged from
   slush.

If you are using the Win2K box as the TINI's interface to the
      Internet
then the Win2K box has to forward packets to and from the TINI
      with
possible header translation. Win2K will do this using "Internet
connection sharing", but if you were using this then I would
      expect the
TINI to have a private IP address - 10.n.n.n, 172.16.n.n or
      192.168.n.n.

Why would you expect this?  The TINI address needs to be set by me,
so it is what I have
set it to. I don't understand?

Since it doesn't you are obviously doing something a bit
      different.
Could you please explain a bit more about your configuration ?

I did not have connection sharing on, so that was hoping that would
do it.  I tried it and no changes.

Please note that a lot of Internet addresses will not respond to
      'ping'
so just because ping doesn't work doesn't for a particular
      address
      doesn't mean that there isn't a connection.
(win2k), first.Yes, I make sure that I can ping from the command prompt (win2k), first.

   Thanks Bob
