My experience was quite different. I porter my LCD IO code from Java to C.
It compiled and run with no problems. I used printf/getchar() and it all
printed and received input from JavaKit console. I even managed to create a
wrapper for rom_init and I plan to create wrappers for the rest of the ROM
APIs as time permits.

The compiler definitely is not perfect - pointers to functions have some
issues, but I managed to work around the problems. I will put a small "How
to" document in the following days.

PS: I used precompiled version 2.3.3 and a fresh build from the CVS tree,
both behaved quite well.
