Re: SendMail tini 1.11 not working: msg#00523hardware.microcontrollers.tini
Hi Bob, Thanks for all the information. It makes sense and I've applied it, but I must still be missing something. Here's my tini and win2k ipconfig settings: Hostname : tini00f170. Current IPv4 addr.: 67.68.24.120/24 (255.255.255.0) (active)Current IPv6 addr.: fe80:0:0:0:260:35ff:fe00:f170/64 (active) Default IPv4 GW : 67.68.24.119 Ethernet Address : 00:60:35:00:f1:70 Primary DNS : 207.236.176.26 Secondary DNS : DNS Timeout : 0 (ms) DHCP Server : DHCP Enabled : false Mailhost : Restore From Flash: Not Committed Windows 2000 IP Configuration Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 67.68.24.119 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 67.68.24.119 Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : I'm trying to ping an address which can be pinged from the command prompt on the same win2k computer. TINI has never been able to ping anything accept the win2k computer address, before I installed the DSL software. I'm not sure if this is a TINI issue or a win2k issue, but I do know everything is ok, but TINI. Do you see anything wrong? Thanks, Peter Bauer Bob Hinton wrote: Peter, So the DSL modem has an RJ45 Ethernet connection and is connected to the hub, correct ? I presume the DSL modem provides you with a connection to the Internet via your ISP. If so then it would be usual for the DSL modem to be allocated a single IP address via a DHCP server administered via the ISP. If you want to share this ONE IP address between two or more computers then something has to implement NAT (Network Address Translation). (see http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm ) If you don't do this then even if packets could reach the Internet from your TINI then there would be no mechanism to route replies back to the TINI from the Internet. If you use the Win2K box as the TINI's gateway then it has to be prepared to route the packets to the Internet and handle any replies. Since, from the perspective of the Internet, you only have one IP address which is already used by the Win2K box the Win2K box has to modify the headers of the packets from the TINI to make it appear that they have come from this one IP address. It also has to determine which of the replies from the Internet should be forwarded to the TINI and re- map the packet headers back to the TINI's address. "Internet connection sharing" on Win2K implements NAT and so will do this for you. A prerequisite of using this is that the TINI must use an IP address allocated for private use (probably 192.168.1.2 - look at the help for Internet Connection Sharing on the Win2K box). Without Internet Connection Sharing or similar the TINI will be on a very private network that only includes it and the Win2K box. I hope this helps.
