I have seen something similar, but not as drastic. I replaced all my
light bulbs with compact flourescents and they give off infrared in
the range of my infrared distribution setup. Of all the light bulbs,
one of them was particularly bad. I shielded the receiver so that it
didn't have direct radiation from the bulb, and the reception improved
some.

I would suggest, that during the day, and when the infrared is
working, to turn on each light, one by one, and see if any interfere.
Note: don't simply turn one light on - try - turn it off - turn
another on - try ...... actually turn one on - try - turn another
on... as it might be that some combination of lights be sufficient to
interfere.

Alternatives; any kind of night light could be a source of
interference; or if you have a mirror hung on a door that the door
would be swung open and the mirror would be at an angle to reflect a
light source that would interfere.

I'm not sure about a fire in the fireplace, whether that would give
off infrared, but I'm inclined to say that it does.

I have some devices that won't receive the remote's signals if you
have the remote too close to the receiver.

I'm about all out of ideas.

Hhhmmmm... Look for any little green men outside your window holding
an
infrared light source, bent on frustrating you.
