You have arrived here way too early ;-)

Most gps users are not aware of GPSBabel and other GPS utilities until
they begin to understand their value and the difficulty of working with
them and the terms you posted using the mapping software which is
normally used right after the purchase. By the time most find GPSBabel,
these terms are old friends.

In fact, from my observations, TomTom and others are moving away from
even allowing users to use these tools outside of their proprietary
software (and hardware) either to keep them dependent on their products
or on the assumption that users are not smart enough to work at such a
high tech level. I have to guess that is why they also avoid using
terms which have been around for a very long time in navigation circles ;-)
