Think of it this way:

Waypoints: Points that you'd like to visit along the way to your destination.
River, woods, Grandma's house

Track: The track or trail you left getting to grandma's house. You might
actually go to some of the waypoints. home, main street, 1st ave, gas
station, 2nd ave, main street, I-222, exit 10, river road, ...

Route: The intended track before you actually drive (walk, bicycle, fly) it.
In the above track example the gas station was not on your route - but you did
stop there with a detour up 1st ave and 2nd ave. The Waypoints are what builds
a route. The gas station could have been a waypoint but you didn't originally
plan on stopping there so you didn't tell the GPS to send you to it. The GPS
picked the most direct (?) route connecting the waypoints you wanted.
