SCSI LUNS and PowerVault 122: msg#00401

Subject: SCSI LUNS and PowerVault 122
We have PowerVault 122T connected to a PowerEdge 1650 running RedHat Linux 7.3.

We have been struggling with the PowerVault. It is seen and we can backup data to it. But we have not been able to get full functionality.

Using MTX we can load and unload tapes from the autoloader slots. And then using BRU we can run backup. But the cleaning tape is never recognized.

We tried Tapeware from Yosemite Technologies. It too does not see the autoloader.

When check /proc/scsi/scsi, the file is empty; nothing shows up.

Tech Support at Tapeware said we should try appending

append= "max_scsi_luns=2"

to the grub.conf file used at boot up to force the scanning for LUNS. Did not change anything.

Viewing dmesg shows that the PowerVault 122 is detected at boot as shown in this clip (the PV 122 is from BenchMark.)

scsi2 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.6
        <Adaptec 3960D Ultra160 SCSI adapter>
        aic7899: Ultra160 Wide Channel B, SCSI Id=7, 32/253 SCBs

  Vendor: BNCHMARK Model: VS640 Rev: 5032
  Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

It seems that some driver somewhere is missing for the autoloader. I have talked with Dell Sever support; specifically the storage specialists. They seem pretty focused on Veritas on Windows.
