Wireless driver discussion

Hi,
my name is Amish. I am working on a project where I will need to access a 
wireless card directly (Create home brew routing protocol) to send and 
receive data bypassing the usuall tcp/ip protocol that comes with wireless 
modules these days. I will therefore need to create a module that talks to 
the wireless card directly and passes the information back to user 
application. I will also be working with wireless on PDAs. I currently have 
familiar 0.8.2 on an Ipaq h5555 Since I am very new at this, I am not sure 
to which mailing list I should subscribe or if this even falls under kernel 
discussion. I would really appreciate a suggestion from anybody about 
possible books or website that might be good for learning purposes. Thanks a
