garbaled bootloader display on ipaq H3135/3100

My bootloader display with version 2.20.3:

Now imagine that in grayscale. It did verify, and when I press the record 
button to flash the new image, all the little displays on the right side 
change. I don't have a serial cable (hence my flashing from the CF card) which, 
from what I've read, limits my options. I can get it to boot properly with the 
existing WinCE ROM, so I'm optimistic about Linux working once it's flashed on.

The question:
How do I correct this display?

Can someone post the exact keystrokes to a completed flash from a CF?
