Check your terminfo database. Make sure that

% infocmp screen

outputs

acsc=++\,\,--..00``aaffgghhiijjkkllmmnnooppqqrrssttuuvvwwxxyyzz{{||}}~~,

the other solution is to not use centericq. A good substitute is
bitlbee,
