Thanks for your quick reply!

The usernames in plaintext database (raddb/users) are always
case-sensitive. If you are using PAM to authenticate, the best
way out would be to write a small pass-through module which will
downcase the username in the PAM credentials. Writing such a
module is quite straightforward.

OK, we'll think about it.

The other problem is that one of our NAS's, a Cisco 3030 VPN
Concentrator, produces *only* a detail.auth file but no detail file. All
other NAS's have

Are you using Acct-Type attribute for that NAS?

Hmm, I don't know. There's nothing to configure on the NAS in that respect. I haven't found that term in the GNU Radius Manual.

Do you see any records from that NAS in the output of radwho command?

No.

Does it produce any error/warning messages in your radius.log?

No, I haven't seen any. Authentication works fine ... oops. Accounting to that server wasn't configured. But now that I've changed that I see the following in radius.log

Jan 14 16:58:35: Auth.notice: Login OK: [a8021520]: CLID unknown (from nas vpn-gw)
Jan 14 16:58:37: Acct.crit: CHILD: exit on signal (11)
Jan 14 16:58:41: Main.notice: Retransmitting ACCT reply: client vpn-gw.rrz.Uni-Koeln.DE, I
D: 1

There *are* now entries in radwho:

pspringe pspringe PPP S1227 Die 16:53 vpn-gw vpn82-2.vpn.Uni-
ddumitre ddumitre PPP S1228 Die 16:56 vpn-gw vpn82-3.vpn.Uni-
a8021520 a8021520 PPP S1228 Die 16:58 vpn-gw vpn82-4.vpn.Uni-

But the detail file still is empty.
