See the code/patches at the "Cockpit Partitioner" project, which has a bunch of changes I made to parted to allow it to be easily scripted and also support setting numeric partition types. The project is dead, but the code lives on (unmaintained). http://sourceforge.net/projects/cockpit-part/ Yes, Andrew hates numeric partition types, but they are a requirement for certain cases (BIOS, Windows, etc).
