If you want posix paths everywhere, then use Cygwin. You'll get an
'ar' (and everything else) that understands "/usr/local" paths. On the
other end is mingw, which attempts no path translation whatsoever.
MSYS (which is actually a fork of an old version of Cygwin) tries to be
a go-between, supporting posix-style paths as arguments but translating
them to win32 paths upon invocation of mingw tools.
