Sorry for not answering. I was rather busy preparing a research work these days.

To implement your proposal of targets with persistent storage, one
should specify when to store and when not. So we would need another
variable, like .PERSISTENT.

For storage, I would use a file, with a name of "." + target_name + ".state"

I cannot find now any other issue. I will prepare another small
prototype implementation.
