For future people reaching this thread in the archive and
seeking up-to-date information, I'd like to point out that the
keywords to grep the documentations for are "convenience library".

The Automake manual has a full section entitled `Libtool
Convenience Libraries', and the Libtool manual mentions
convenience libraries in a few paragraphs too.
