I'd have thought easy to cut out that stuff.

Check out Phalanx and Sjeng.

Sjeng definitely isn't any simpler, but the coding style is very
clean, although I don't think I read the search code.

There are also some deliberately simple chess programs around, about
which I plead ignorance, but Google will find them quickly enough.
