Subject: The no-paper work - msg#00045

Heya,

Article 9 on the sponsors brochure says:
"
To minimise detritus, The GUADEC Organisers might replace some inserts
and adverts by electronic versions.
"

And we'll be doing just that!

Instead of handing out a wad of paper that people will try to chuck
anywhere at the earliest time, we'll be handing out USB sticks. The
current plan is to use 2GB USB sticks, as they're big enough to be
useful after the conference.

We're looking for people and some help.

- People to contact the sponsors to ask them for their data to put on
the USB key disks (only open-format documents, PDFs and HTML preferred)
- People to create a naviguable presentation, including data that would
usually be found in the booklet (speaker notes, information about
Birmingham, etc.)
- One person to create a few potential designs for the logo on the keys
themselves.
- People from a distribution that would be interested in sponsoring a
live version of their distribution on the USB key. This would be in
counterpart for partial payment of the keys[1], or extensive help on the
above.

The data gathering would take place in GNOME SVN, so it would be better
if the interested people already had accounts, although we can work on
creating accounts if there is a need.

If you're interested, drop me a mail in private, and we can start
creating the SVN module, and gathering data from the various sponsors.

Cheers

[1]: The estimated price is £5,000 for about 500 keys, with data
loading, and design.

As last year, having a large printed board with the daily schedule, plus smaller ones posted on notice boards about the place. I don't want to go creating extra work for people but I think we should be able to produce a pdf containing that info and those who like circling paper can print it themselves (and we'd probably want to keep it simple rather than burn everyone's ink on hires photos of Jono's beard). > - Most of the work of doing the booklet is getting all the > information > together, which you'll need for the website anyway, the extra work in > lay-out and printing isn't a huge amount (but is a nice chunk of your > budget). I agree, and having all this on the usb key adds extra work. As I said to Bastien, the easy route is just to do as previous years and print a programme, whereas going the USB route is only going to work if we can find volunteers to make it work (since neither of us have the time). However it does give us (and the presenters, and sponsors) scope do to other stuff - include slide decks, screencasts, videos, source code, examples - the sky is the limit (but it's all guff unless someone can pull it all together). > - Finally, it's about the only memento people keep of the conference What about the t-shirts, bags, photos, videos, scars and tattoos? In the end the lead time for USB key v. Brochure production (I mean just the physical production) is about the same ~ 2 weeks, so as long as we have the content ready we can chicken out nearer the time. guadec.org in other browsers

Hi, some suggestions for website improvement. As a coincidence today I saw guadec.org's homepage on Explorer 6. It looks... well, not good. I wonder what % of i.e. tech journalists use this browser still, or power users & developers interested in getting a first shot of GNOME. On the other hand, the website doesn't look that good either on the N800 due to the fact that it's not welkl suited to resist a 800px wide resolution. But doesn't look that bad either, and I'm not going to complain about this. ;) One thing I hadn't seen before is this central banner with horizontal scrollbar... -- Quim Gil /// http://desdeamericaconamor.org
