heh, yeah. i went through implementing the stuff related to
set_default_icon_list, which i needed for gtk-demo, and uncommented the
stuff you'd done before.
incidentally, if you haven't tried it, gtk-demo actually works.
the drawing area sample is broken for everybody but my workstation at
the office (rectangle stuff in progress); and i don't think the
changedisplay sample has a hope of working (again, requires 2.2 but i
have only 2.0)... but the rest of them actually do work.

apparently i found the report before you replied but after you fixed it,
because i just spent ten minutes wondering where the problem was.
