Hi,

There is a syntax-colouring text widget called Scintilla living at
https://sourceforge.net/project/?group_id=2439 with an example text
editor called Scite.

There is also another editor that uses a wrapped version of scintilla at
http://www.micampe.it/software/moleskine.

There are Python bindings but I don't know of Perl bindings.

There is also the GtkExText widget which _is_ bound and is available
at the site of another project.
