encrypted chat in jabber

How can i use an encrypted channel to chat via jabber? Is requiered that
both clients use the same procedure to achieve a secure conversation?
Im just interested in my side of connection, I mean, only encrypt 
packets from my client to jabber.org server and viceversa.
