Pete,

You might be able to get it to work by adding host.smtl.co.uk as an alias
to your loopback address (127.0.0.1) in /etc/hosts and specifying
host.smtl.co.uk as your jabber server. This way the local client and
server think they are talking to the correct hostname.

If you are on windows the file is in your
<windows-dir>\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
