Ah, naivete. Sigh.

Someone needs to do the libX11 merge. I cannot (repeat, cannot) do this,
as I'm currently engaged in an orgy of end-of-semester assessment, and
watching the looming spectre of exams: under a week of swotvac (about 4
or 5 days, I think) after the end of semester, until I have two exams in
one day. I really don't have the time.

So, someone needs to merge libX11. While we're slipping, we might as
well change the scope a little, since it's been a while. In particular,
I want to mark Xpm and Xaw as deprecated, and slide them out of the
release. I have a dream where they are dead, and I am firing bullets
indiscriminately into their unmarked grave, and performing other
unmentionable acts.

In short: someone please, please, *please* merge libX11. I'll take care
of xtrans (properly), hopefully by the end of this week; while I'm
pumping myself full of caffeine to finish uni stuff, might as well go
all out. Also, feel free to object strenuously if you see reason why Xpm
and Xaw should be released as part of the xlibs general release.

In an effort to consolidate our small community, I'd like to delete the xserver@ and xlib@ mailing lists and move discussions to the xorg-CC+yJ3UmIYqDUpFQwHEjaQ@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx mailing list. I will not automatically subscribe anyone to the xorg@ mailing list (a few individuals have really objected in the past when I've done that), so if you want to continue to monitor X development at freedesktop.org, please feel free to subscribe. I'll shut down the xserver-hTcysPvq43Q@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xlibs@ lists in a few days by turning off postings (if I can figure out how). I'll leave the archives for posterity. -keith pgp6mJl2YVS9c.pgp Description: PGP signature _______________________________________________ xlibs mailing list xlibs-CC+yJ3UmIYqDUpFQwHEjaQ@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/xlibs

Re: Redefining 1.0.1,

Not that I disagree with your sentiments, but consider the following: - The xterm program still has a dependency on some form of the Xaw library. Though it looks like it can use any of about 4 different versions of Xaw. - The VSW5 testsuite requires Xaw for some of the tests. I don't recall if VSW5 contains it's own copy of Xaw to use if one is not provided by the system. - I'm pretty sure Motif/Open Motif has a dependency on the Xpm library. Xaw is used by MANY MANY applications - even new ones - and has become more or less a (de facto) "industry standard". All X vendors ship it and will likely ship it in the next ten or more years - removing it from the base X11 library distribution will only cause (unneccesary) trouble. And remeber that (nearly) _all_ X11 (diagnostics) tools with a GUI are based on Xaw - what would you offer as replacement ? And what will happen to applications like "xdm", "xterm" or the X11 test suite ? ---- Bye, Roland -- __ . . __ (o.\ \/ /.o) roland.mainz-QtDJSZoAcjhAfugRpC6u6w@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx \__\/\/__/ MPEG specialist, C&&JAVA&&Sun&&Unix programmer /O /==\ O\ TEL +49 641 7950090 (;O/ \/ \O;)
