You are right, I was not reading carefully.

On my copy of cygwin there is a ranlib in both /bin and /usr/bin (they
seem to be the same, but are not linked together). If your cygwin
doesn't have one then you need to install whatever package contains
ranlib.

I don't know what package that might be.

doinstall does not run ranlib itself. It calls /usr/bin/install which
does whatever is right for your system. If the install script on your
system thinks ranlib needs to be there, then this step is needed.

I should not think that a mingw program would understand the cygwin file
naming conventions... but I can't swear to that.

How very odd. The very first thing ff does is print out a copyright
message to stderr. If that isn't coming out then there is something
fundamentally wrong with your install.

Or maybe it's just grabbing mingw libraries before the cygwin libraries
or something.

I can't really help you I'm afraid. I've never seen anything like this.
