Finally got things to work (with db3). Few notes that could have saved
me time:

1) CVS version of sfs works well, however had problems compiling
sfs-0.7.2.tar.gz (libtool issues...)
2) a pointer to dmalloc rpm might be useful (i was glad to find the
gcc3.x rpms...)
