please include your pam config, maybe it has some problem.
also let us know which version of pam_pkcs11 you are using,
and how it is configured.

finally, maybe you can use the pkcs11-spy.so module to
create a log file? that way we could see what is happening
with pam_pkcs11.

what version of opensc are you using? 

if gdm works and xdm does not, it looks like an application
problem. no idea, I don't think anyone reported success or
failure with xdm (guess all alternatives are more popular).
