unfortunatly opensuse 10.1 has quite old versions of opensc.
if you want to try a newer package, those are available at
         ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/sbrabec/gnucash2

no, it should report an unsupported card, I guess.

does
        opensc-tool -l 
list your reader?

does
        opensc-tool -a
show the atr of your card?

what kind of card is that? how was it initialized?
