Subject: GCC Runs on MVS - msg#00018

Folks,

After much fiddling I have managed to get the GCC I370 code to (just about)
run on VM/370 under CMS. I used the basic MVS code from: -

http://www.spftools.com/downloads/gccmvs.htm

and modified the run time so it runs under VM/370 R6. After testing it as a
cross compiler I loaded the Assembler sources onto VM/370 and assembled them.
As regular readers will know when I tried to link the code the 255 externals
per TEXT file limit in DMSLDR/DMSOLD preventing the files linking. I have
modified DMSLDR so to have a limit of 511 externals and GCC now loads and
GENMODS. I have compiled and run a very simple program:-

main()
{
printf(" test \n");
}

So the thing basically works. I still have a number of issues with how it
acceses CMS files etc. but if any one else want to have a play I can make the
files available on the group web site.

If any one else want to help let me know,

Dave.

Re: VM6 PL/1 ???

Dave, Just wanted to leave a little feedback on the 4-pack system experiences. I was able to download and use the RAR reader for OS X on small files but ran into another difficulty with the transfer of the RAR format 19-meg pack from your web page. The Mac Safari browser was able to download the rar file successfully but ran into difficulty in storing it on disk. It may have just went short on virtual storage but I had to cancel the task. By the way, I'm stuck with a 55k modem for the time being and the 19 meg RAR file took over an hour. Downloading the 4-pack system ZIP files from Jay Maynard's web page for version 2.1 went very smoothly and with about the same download times using the modem. The VM system was ipl'ed very shortly after that on the Mac G4 under OS X ver 10.3.3 and VM 6 came up just fine. I then put the entire VM system on a single CD rom and ported it to the target which is an older Mac G3 ver 10.2.8 and VM came right up there too. The older Mac is my bench computer which gets a lot use but is not internet connected. You've put a lot of work into that system and it has several very nice features once I stumble into the documentation. It co-exists along side of my other VM system which does not use compressed dasd. The compression does save lots of space when needed. I'm now able to ipl from either system based on features needed. Presently I'm working on a cross-assembler written in PL/1 for an older computer collection. Thanks again for your assistance and for sharing the 4-pack system features!
