This is another area - or an extension of the same one - where many
false assumptions exist. People out in the industry assume that the
PCMs and IBM were always at each other's throats and conflict was
always the order of the day. True - we pulled stunts, like my famous
placement of a trackside banner opposite IBM's entetainment facility
at Donington - but basically there was a great deal of respect for
IBM's intellectual property. Sales commission plans and price lists -
highly confidential stuff, sometimes, WAS returned unread. One
company's slipup generated some smirking on occasions, but generally
we got on very professionally. Amdahl, for instance, would have
called IBM and notified them that the material was on view.
