Peter,

I have little time, and will for now only address your beliefs that
is currently impossible to build a z/arch emulation system without
access to restricted materials in a reasonable time frame. The
other issues have been discussed before and a renewed discussion is
unlikely to shed new light on things.

I think that you are underestimating the power of open source
development here.

We had some experimental 64 bit implementations in hercules well
before the zPOP was available. In fact I still have one
(rudimentary) that includes the power-pc architecture in hercules.
In fact one could execute power-pc instructions from SIE running
S/390 mode. (maybe I should patent this idea, if I have to believe
you I could then be a rich man one day, as I believe that future
mainframe systems will include these architectures in this way)

John Erhman stated in a conversation about the 64 bit architecture
in november 2000 that the zPOP would describe "all elements of the
64 bit architecture". John has been 100% correct, I have not found
anything so far that would indicate otherwise, nor do I believe
that anyone else has.

When I look at the hercules development team I see some 50 people,
which I consider the best and the finest in their fields. The grant
total of relevant experience that this group has summs up to about
1000 years!

I should also not forget the aid and support from our users (almost
3000 to date), this will add yet again a few eons of relevant
experience to the hercules effort.

In light of the above I do not see it as surprising that large
companies including IBM embrace open source development.

Given the eons of experience in the hercules community, I think that
lack of z/SIE documentation for example would not have made any
difference.

I am convinced that properly manged open source development efforts
are near impossible to compete with in a proprietary fashion.

Jan Jaeger.
