I haven't seen any answers to the two very simple questions I've been
asking:

a) Name a legal licensee.

b) Name the source of the z/SIE information.

The first one shouldn't be that hard, after all. There are plenty of
people getting help with running licensed software on the main
Hercules-390 board - a couple using DB2 in the last couple of days,
for instance. Just email a few of them and get one to send a copy of
their license agreement.

Of course, there's the vanishingly tiny chance that one or the other
of the latest two are actually running DB2 illegally. That would
change things more than a little - DB2 is over in Janet Perna's happy
little Data Management bunch, where IBM is supposedly pouring $630
million into new tools. With one of her own people openly claiming
to be licensed for "all software on all platforms" she might find
complaining about DB2 piracy herself a tad embarrassing.

The next escalation will be when someone posts looking for help with
big-name ISV software like Adabas, ACF2, etc. That could be when the
ordure finally encounters the air-moving device.

Ever read a Computer Associates license agreement?

That will bring in the due diligence aspect of IBM's protection of
critical assets like SIE - if an ISV makes a case that IBM's
carelessness with, e.g., the z/SIE specifications has enabled the
production of a piracy tool, we could be in for some real legal
twisties.

I'm amazed to see SHARE tolerating - even perhaps encouraging -
distribution of this stuff at its meetings.
