RE: MINIMUM OS WISHLIST: msg#00040emulators.hercules390.advocacy
I'd like to see MVS 4.3.0 as its the last release that supports 3330 and 3350 in addition to 3390. Of course 5.2.2 would be nice as it has open edition (primitive as it was) that sort of worked. Need ISPF/PDF, SDSF, C/C++, ASMH TSO/E is a must. (as I recall the Base TSO didnt do much) TCP/IP for FTP and tn3270 What ever level of VTAM is required VM/ESA 2.x is a nice to have. -----Original Message----- From: Dino Jr [mailto:computerguy-ALQL4mxK1q4mp8TqCH86vg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Friday, October 18, 2002 8:09 PM To: hercules-advocacy-hHKSG33TihhbjbujkaE4pw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: hercules-390-hHKSG33TihhbjbujkaE4pw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [hercules-390] MINIMUM OS WISHLIST Instead of fighting about what is or isn't legal let's try a different, more constructive, subject... + What would the *minimum* configuration be that a hobbiest would need? Someone mentioned awhile back that the ADCD has lots of IBM's best stuff included and I think it is reasonable that IBM would not want to distribute their latest & greatest too easily. Instead, let us imagine that IBM **would** be willing to do a Hobbyist License **if** it could do so by using a cut-down and/or older version of their OS family. With this in mind, what features / options / packages would be a MINIMUM and WHY? Before you answer that consider also that there are really three different kinds of "Mainframe Hobbyists" as far as I can see: TYPE A: Nostalgic Mainframers These are oldtimers who no longer have a mainframe but want to play with one just for the heck of it. A lot of Hercules was started by & for just such types of hobbyists. TYPE B: Student Mainframers Just as simple and clean as it sounds - various kinds of novices in our world who want to learn and *need* a "Little Blue" box for hands-on learning. TYPE C: Tinkering Mainframers Individuals who want a Sandbox of their very own. Subtypes of this range from "start-up" software companies to the console operator who has an idea for a utility program to make the job easier and want's to be a hero at work for providing a ready-made solution (subject to QR and CM of course).
