It depends what 'program' we're talking about - Amdahl had several.
However - from one comment made last year - I believe we're talking
about 'Merlin'.
Merlin was a significant asset, despite Amdahl's legendary failure to
spot the BCR 15,0 problem. At one time Amdahl was negotiating an
exchange with IBM - the rights to Merlin in exchange for some of the
ESAME stuff. Once the decision was made (by Fujitsu, following a now
infamous meeting with Alan Bell) to abandon 64-bit development, these
negotiations turned into straight cash-for-rights.
I have heard several views on the outcome of these discussions - they
concur, but are not conclusive. What I consider the most likely
scenario is that Merlin was built under and was subject to (at least
parts of) TIDA, but also that by the time certain testing was done
the rights to the package actually belonged to IBM.
So - did Amdahl have the right to permit Merlin to be used to
validate non-IBM and non-Amdahl products? Almost certainly not. In
the first place TIDA would preclude it, and in the second it may not
even have been theirs to dispose of.
I can say with absolute certainty that anyone caught using Merlin for
an unauthorized purpose would not be allowed to return to their desk.

I think not. I doubt you would understand most of our private
traffic.
I was seriously considering a reply - knowing that Peter has resigned
from the group and therefore is neither reading nor in a position to
post, and then I came across the following:

Which kind of made replying pointless.

I've gotten other complaints about this. The best suggestion I can make is
to go to Yahoo!'s help system, follow the link to "How do I unsubscribe?",
then click on the No button. You'll be taken to a form that allows you to
send mail to Yahoo! technical support. Ask them why you're still getting
mail eeven though you're not subscribed.

I think this represents the past rather than the future.
There certainly was one individual with a valid license, but he's
been quiet for a while.
The AD/CD is not available under Hercules (or UMX, for that matter)
as it quite clearly states on IBM's web page.
I also recently heard of: "IBM has taken a business decision not to
license its commercial software on this platform."

Re: Re: Why are the FUD spreaders spreading FUD?
Mr. Ward,
Yes, it was intentionally disrespectful, but only mildly so, you must
admit. For character assault, however, you can't top accusing us of being
thieves, etc., especially when it isn't so. FUD means "Fear, Uncertainty and
Doubt." Making up a nickname has nothing whatsoever to do with FUD, and it
wasn't
even a particularly insulting nickname. I chose it merely for its juvenile
ring.
Actually, I should and hereby do apologize for that, for I do respect
you,
at least when you let your enthusiasm show. Still, why you think you or your
company has anything whatsoever to fear from a hobbyist open source project I
can't imagine. When you're not actively trying to tear Hercules and the small
community which has formed around it apart, I do enjoy your posts and we have
had
some pretty pleasant exchanges in the past.
So, then, please accept my apology for the nickname; I genuinely do
prefer
logic to rhetorical tricks.
Regards,
Bomber
